mfa jewelry design + metalsmithing.

.2020 - 2021

this year i was working on the ways we view and interpret jewelry, most specifically in the act of wearing jewelry. in general, jewelry represents a higher social status mainly driven by our value appreciation of gemstones and precious metals. there is a lopsided conversation and acceptance of traditional jewelry versus other forms of body modification. for example, we could consider torturing a practice that causes continuous pain to the body (sometimes considered masochism), which is frowned upon unless it is for achieving today’s beauty standards. when talking about beauty, what only matters is the final product.
